Help finding the right saw chain

What saw chain do you need?

What Chain Do I need?

  First -Look for any combination of numbers stamped on the guide bar.
 Saw chain and guide bars both have identification marks on them, and unless they are extremely worn out, they explain what pitch and gauge of the chain currently on your saw. Look for any numbers and letters on the drive links. That will often tell you what pitch and gauge you’re running.

 Then look on our drive link code page

How to count chainsaw chain drive links

Count the number of drive links on your old chain loop to get the correct replacement chain.    The chain drive link count must match the guide bar drive link numbers to work correctly. The drive link count is the last 3 numbers on the chain part number. example 72EXL072 = 72 Drive Links          72EXL070 = 70 Drive Link count

72EXL114 = 114 Drive Link count

Matching the drive link count is more important than bar cutting length as drive link count is different on the same length bar.

How to Determine chainsaw cutting length

Determine cutting length. This is not the total length of the guide bar

Oregon bars are coded

The first 2 digits are the bar length

Example 200RNDD025 is 20"

Finding the saw chain gauge (thickness)

 Gauge  -shown above is the thickness of the drive link. It is determined by measuring the portion of the drive link that fits into the groove of the guide bar. Common saw chain gauge sizes are .043" (1.1mm), .050" (1.3mm), .058" (1.5mm),  and .063" (1.6mm).

 The chain above is .050 gauge or 1.3mm. (thickness of a new dime)

Oregon bars are coded. The third number is the gauge

  1. Example 200RNDD009 = 3rd digit 0 = .050 gauge
  2. Example 208RNDD009 = 3rd digit 8 = .058 gauge
  3. Example 203RNDD009 = 3rd digit 3 = .063 gauge
  4. Example 164MLEA074 = 3rd digit 4 = .043 gauge

What does the G mean on the saw chain box?

We have had a lot of phone calls over the added G on the old part numbers. Oregon printed it on the white loop box such as 72JGX072G or 90PX052G

 Oregon has removed the G on the red box saw chain would now read 90PX052.

The best solution is to ignore the end letter as it only deals with packaging. Other numbers that can be disregarded are

90PX052X =90PX052

90PX052CK = 90PX052

90PX052XMA =90PX052

90PX052E =90PX052

The codes are designed for different packages and all would have the same exact chain inside
